Van Halen....less
Billed as the ODDFEST the two former lead singers for Van Halen, David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar ( both of whom dont speak to Eddie or Alex Van Halen ) decided to unite for a tour that included seperate sets by each artist. With a crowd split between loyalties stemming from different Van Halen era’s, some fans went to see Hagar, others to see David Lee. Sammy opened up bringing out former bass player Michael Anthony and jammed on “I cant drive 55 ‘ and “Three Lock Box” , Sammy also used the stage as a vehicle to peddle his Cabo Wabo Tequila turing the Mars Music Amphitheatre into a Bar.

When David Lee came out he opened with the classic ‘ Hot For Teacher’, the crowd went nuts , David Lee then wore his trademark skin tight pants, and made some gripping gestures to the ladies. He went on to perform classic’s like “ Running with the Devil”, Pretty Woman, DOA, Jump and Ice Cream Man . Both singers had the crowd reminiscing about days gone past. From my perspective David Lee Roth was hands down the Man. You just can’t beat original Van Halen
.

The 17th Annual Winter Music Conference
The 17th annual Winter Music Conference delivered prime music to its sexy Miami Beach venue. You name the dj, Sander Kleinenberg to DJ Hell to Daft Punk, he/she was there pumping phatter than usual beats to crowds of chic guests from the west coast, NY, Chicago and Europe in every SOBE club and poolside. D’Vox mag’s Ultra Fest catered to about 40,000 fans, serving them with a nearly exhaustive list of hot international dj acts, including Sandra Collins, Sasha and Digweed. Drum ‘n’ basser Goldie even performed on the main stage!Unique to this year’s fest though were the Dancestar Awards. This year’s
Dancestar Awards took place at the Jackie Gleason Theatre on March 24th. It was the first American venue for the European borne ceremony. Too bad the awards were only viewed by European Oakie advocates bopping their good haircuts to the broadcast via various European versions of MTV.

Rock Is Back
Something new and fun is churning up the radio waves. The happy in-your-face infectious sound of bands like the Vines, the Hives, White Stripes, and the Strokes are a welcome reprieve from the overdone flood of recent radio rock. With a sound reminiscent of punk/garage rock, an “almost new” thing is happening. This niche blends a less produced sound of raw hooky vocal melodies, various rock/punk rhythm sections and punchy guitars.

All the rave in the UK, the Strokes have busted out of New York and continue to drip coolness throughout the US scene. With frontman Julian Casablanca (the son of model-agency giant John Casablanca) at the helm, these five childhood friends from New York City prep schools are exhuming a late 70’s punk movement. The band’s popularity is evident by the numerous mentions and inclusions in the rosters of the 2001 top recording achievements for their album, Is This It.
Also riding this fresh wave of fun, the two-piece drum guitar/vocal act White Stripes are finding an eager fan base. Dressing in all red and white this duo has successfully released their third album, White Blood Cells, which has sold over 270,000 copies. Hailing from Detroit this group brings a blues-based foundation to the party. They have spent this summer playing live shows with the Strokes in a line-up guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

Joining the ranks from Sweden, The Hives are also delivering an enthusiastic shot in the arm. Having sold-out a club tour in the US, this matching quintet (which sports rock star names such as Chris Dangerous and Dr. Matt Destruction) are attempting to subvert the “New World Order”. With their hit Hate to Say I Told You So, from the sophomore release Veni Vidi Vicious, The Hives in their own words are “Gonna spread the disease”.

Australian bred LA transplants, The Vines find homage in this genre with their debut album, Highly Evolved. Likened to Nirvana, The Beatles and even The Replacements, the group is sharing the hype on the fringe of this rebellious limelight.

On a slightly different track but with a similar raw taste, the “filed down vocal chords” crooning of Andrew W.K. is inciting the masses to indulge in party rock. With some controversy, Andrew walks the gamut of intense emotional release on the inaugural album, “I GetWet”. “May I suggest the epitaph ‘when it’s time to party, we will party hard’ ”?

To catch all of the above bands live at one event you must travel to the annual Reading Festival in England. This three day event in late August will feature a who’s who of modern rock, including Jane’s Addiction, Foo Fighters, Prodigy, Incubus etc. etc. etc.
